Minesweeper Strategy: Patterns, Chording, Flags and Probability
Minesweeper rewards skill far more than luck. The same board that traps a beginner into a fatal guess is, to a trained eye, a sequence of forced moves with one obvious safe cell after another. This is the strategy guide: the handful of patterns you can solve on sight, the counting trick underneath all of them, how to chord without blowing yourself up, and what to actually do when you hit a real 50/50. Master these and you will clear boards faster and survive far longer in Infinite mode.
The mindset: never guess until you must
Beginners click hopefully and blow up. Strong players treat every move as a small proof. Before you reveal a cell, you should be able to say why it is safe — which number guarantees it. If you cannot, you are guessing, and most of the time you do not need to. The whole skill of Minesweeper is squeezing every drop of logic out of the numbers on the board before you ever take a risk.
The single most useful pattern: 1-2-1
Along a straight edge of revealed cells you will constantly see the sequence 1-2-1. It has a fixed solution every time. The two 1s each sit on a mine under the cell to their outer side, and the 2 in the middle is satisfied by those two mines — which means the cell directly under the 2 is safe. Learn to see 1-2-1 and you solve that whole stretch instantly without thinking.
Its cousin, the 1-2-2-1 along an edge, resolves the same way: the mines sit under the two 2s, and the cells under the 1s are safe. These edge patterns come up on almost every board, so recognising them on sight is the fastest single upgrade to your play.
The 1-1 pattern and "the wall"
When two 1s sit next to each other along the edge of the opened area, and both are "looking at" the same pair of covered cells, the second covered cell along is usually safe. The reasoning: the first 1's mine has to be in the shared cell, which then also satisfies the second 1, so the cell beyond it cannot be a mine. The general principle behind all of these is subtraction: if two numbers overlap, the difference between them tells you about the cells they do not share.
Counting: the subtraction trick
Here is the engine under every pattern. Take any revealed number and subtract the flags already around it; that gives the mines still hidden among its covered neighbours. Now compare two overlapping numbers. If a 2 and a 1 share some covered cells, and the 2 needs exactly one more mine than the 1 in the cells they do not share, you have just located a mine — or proven a cell safe — without any guesswork. Almost every "advanced" Minesweeper deduction is really just this subtraction applied carefully.
Chording: clear areas at machine speed
Once a number has exactly as many flags around it as its value, you can chord it — click the number itself to open all of its remaining covered neighbours in a single action. On desktop that is a left-click on the satisfied number; on mobile, a tap. Chording is how fast players clear huge regions in seconds instead of opening cells one at a time.
The warning: chording obeys your flags, not the real mines. If even one of your flags is wrong, chording will happily detonate the actual mine underneath. So only chord a number when you are confident every flag around it is correct. Used well it is the biggest time-saver in the game; used carelessly it is the fastest way to lose a solved board.
Flag economy: flag what you will reuse
You do not have to flag every mine — and on a speed run, many top players barely flag at all, opening only provably safe cells. But for learning and for chording, flagging the mines that border numbers you intend to chord is well worth the clicks. The middle path most players settle on: flag a mine the moment you prove it, because that flag almost always helps satisfy a neighbouring number and unlock the next safe move.
Open the board, then solve the edges
Good players start by opening up space — clicking into likely-blank regions to cascade large safe areas — and only then work the frontier, the boundary between revealed and covered cells where all the information lives. Mines are only ever deducible along that frontier, so that is where your attention belongs. Clicking randomly in the middle of a covered region is pure gambling; working the numbered edge is where skill pays off.
Probability for the genuine 50/50
Sometimes logic runs out and you face two cells that are equally likely to hide the last mine. Two ideas help. First, when you must guess, prefer the cell that touches the most numbers — even if it is a mine, the information you would gain from it being safe is larger, and corners and edges carry less branching uncertainty. Second, keep a rough count: if there are three mines left among eight covered cells, any single covered cell is about a 37 percent risk, and a cell that a nearby number constrains may be much safer than that baseline. Estimating these odds is what separates a good guess from a hopeful one.
Putting it together in Infinite mode
In Infinite mode here you score 10 points per cell you open and 100 for each board you clear, with a coin per board — and it all banks in real time. That rewards two things at once: clean, complete solves (more cells opened) and stacking many boards in a run. Since hitting a mine ends the run, the discipline from this guide — never guess until you must, chord only on certain flags, work the frontier — is exactly what lets a strong player chain board after board. And when you want to lock in a big score, the End game button banks your run before your luck runs out.
