Dead Pixel vs Stuck Pixel: Difference, Tests and Fixes

A suspicious dot on a new monitor is annoying because it is hard to know what you are looking at. A dead pixel, stuck pixel and hot pixel can look similar at first glance, but they mean different things and lead to different next steps.

The quick difference

A dead pixel usually stays black because it is not lighting up. A stuck pixel is locked on one color, often red, green, blue, cyan, magenta or white. A hot pixel is brighter than the surrounding area and may show up most clearly on dark screens or in camera sensors. On a monitor, people often use "hot pixel" casually to mean a bright stuck subpixel.

The easiest way to tell them apart is to use full-screen solid colors. Check black, white, red, green and blue. A dot that stays black on every bright color is likely dead. A dot that appears only on one color may be a stuck subpixel. A dot that glows on black is usually a bright or stuck defect.

Which colors reveal which defect?

Do not confuse pixels with dust

Before you panic, clean the screen gently with a microfiber cloth. Dust can look exactly like a black pixel, especially on a bright screen. A tiny speck may move or disappear after cleaning; a real pixel defect stays in the same grid position no matter what you do. If you can, test in a clean room with the monitor at normal brightness and look from straight ahead.

Also check whether the mark appears in screenshots. A real monitor pixel defect will not appear in a screenshot because screenshots capture the image signal, not the physical panel. If the dot is visible in a screenshot, the problem is software, the page, the image or the graphics pipeline, not a damaged pixel on the display.

Can a stuck pixel be fixed?

Sometimes, but do not count on it. A stuck pixel can occasionally recover after color cycling, gentle panel use or simply time. A dead pixel is much less likely to come back because the pixel is not responding. Avoid aggressive pressure, hard rubbing or sketchy "pixel repair" instructions that tell you to press into the screen. You can turn a tiny issue into a pressure mark or cracked panel.

If the monitor is new, your best option is usually documentation. Run a test, take a photo, note the date, and check the return policy. Many retailers have short return windows, and manufacturer pixel policies vary. Some allow a return for one bright pixel; others require several dark pixels or a cluster before warranty service applies.

What to do after you find one

If you are inside the return window, decide quickly whether the defect bothers you in normal use. A single dark pixel near an edge may disappear during games and work. A bright pixel near the center can be impossible to ignore in movies, coding, writing or dark mode. Your tolerance matters because you are the one who will stare at it every day.

For a used or older screen, a tiny defect may not be worth replacing the panel. Use the pixel test again every few weeks if you are worried it is spreading. Pixel defects usually do not spread like a stain, but pressure damage, panel cracks and liquid damage can create larger patterns that should be treated differently.
