Monitor Test Checklist: Dead Pixels, Ghosting, Color and Uniformity
A new monitor can look fine on the desktop and still have problems you notice later: dead pixels, uneven brightness, distracting backlight bleed, ghosting, wrong refresh rate or washed-out color. This checklist gives you a practical order for testing before the return window disappears.
Before you start
Set the monitor to its native resolution and intended refresh rate. Use the cable you plan to keep, not a random spare. Clean the screen with a microfiber cloth so dust does not look like a defect. Let the monitor warm up for a few minutes, then test in both normal room light and a darker room.
If the monitor has gaming modes, overdrive, HDR, local dimming or blue-light filters, write down the default state before changing anything. Many "defects" are actually settings, especially oversaturated color, crushed blacks or heavy inverse ghosting from an aggressive overdrive mode.
1. Dead and stuck pixels
Open a full-screen pixel test and check white, black, red, green and blue. Move your eyes slowly across the panel, especially near the center where defects are most distracting. A black dot on white may be a dead pixel. A red, green or blue dot that does not change may be stuck. A bright dot on black may be a stuck or hot pixel.
Take photos if you find a defect. Check the retailer return policy and the manufacturer pixel policy. Some brands tolerate a few dark pixels but treat bright pixels more seriously. If the screen is new and the defect bothers you, it is usually better to act quickly than hope you stop noticing it.
2. Uniformity and dirty-screen effect
Display a medium gray screen and look for cloudy patches, vertical bands or darker edges. Some uniformity variation is normal, especially on large panels, but strong blotches can be visible in web pages, spreadsheets, sports, sky scenes and games with flat backgrounds. Move your head a little to separate true uniformity issues from viewing-angle effects.
3. Backlight bleed and IPS glow
Use a black screen in a dark room with brightness set to your real use level. Backlight bleed appears as fixed bright patches near edges or corners. IPS glow changes as you move your head and is partly a viewing-angle effect. Photos can exaggerate both, so judge by what you can actually see from your normal sitting position.
4. Refresh rate and motion
Confirm the operating system is using the advertised refresh rate. Many monitors ship at 60 Hz until you change the display settings. Then test motion in a game or motion test. Ghosting means trails behind moving objects. Inverse ghosting looks like bright or dark halos and can happen when overdrive is too strong. Try several overdrive settings instead of assuming the highest one is best.
5. Sharpness, scaling and text
Open text at normal size and check whether it looks crisp. Wrong resolution, poor scaling, chroma subsampling or unusual subpixel layouts can make text look fuzzy. If you use the monitor for coding, writing or spreadsheets, this matters more than peak brightness or gaming marketing claims.
6. Color and everyday comfort
For non-professional use, start by checking whether whites look neutral, skin tones look believable and dark scenes still show detail. If you do color-critical work, use proper calibration hardware. If you do not, avoid making extreme changes based only on one image. A comfortable brightness level is often more important than maximum brightness.
Keep, exchange or return?
Return decisions are personal. One tiny dark pixel near an edge may not matter. A bright center pixel, heavy bleed, severe banding or fuzzy text can make the monitor unpleasant every day. Test the jobs you actually bought it for: reading, gaming, movies, design, spreadsheets or fast clicking and reaction tools. The right monitor is the one that stays out of your way.
