What Is APM? Actions Per Minute Explained

Every click, keypress and hotkey you hit in a match gets counted somewhere — and in RTS games that count has a name. Here is what APM actually measures, what a good APM looks like in your genre, and how to raise yours with our APM test without wrecking your wrists.

What APM actually measures

APM stands for actions per minute. Every deliberate input counts as one action: a left click, a right click, a hotkey press, an ability key. Hit 300 APM and you are averaging five separate inputs every second, sustained.

The metric was born in real-time strategy. Early StarCraft: Brood War replay tools in the 2000s counted player inputs and displayed APM next to the match timer, and fans started comparing the numbers the way baseball fans compare batting averages. Modern RTS games show APM in the post-match stats, and our APM test brings the same measurement to your browser with 10, 30 and 60 second rounds.

One thing to know about any honest APM counter, including ours: held keys do not count. Auto-repeat is ignored, so parking your finger on a key inflates nothing. APM only counts deliberate, separate actions — which is exactly how the games themselves treat it.

A good counter also tells you where your actions come from. StarCraft made APM famous

APM became a spectator stat in South Korea, where Brood War turned pro gaming into a televised sport. Finals filled stadiums. Cable channels broadcast matches around the clock. Pro teams lived in gaming houses with coaches, analysts and practice schedules that looked like athletic programs. And on screen, next to the minerals and supply counts, sat the APM ticker.

The legends of that era set the numbers people still quote. Lim 'BoxeR' Yo-hwan, the so-called Terran Emperor, was famous for blistering micromanagement. Lee 'Flash' Young-ho — nicknamed God by fans — routinely sustained 300 to 400+ APM across entire matches, with peaks well past 500 during chaotic multi-front battles. At 400 APM you are issuing a command roughly every 150 milliseconds.

Here is the part most people miss: those numbers include warm-up spam. Watch the opening minutes of a pro replay and you will see rapid hotkey taps and empty box-selects that accomplish nothing in-game. The players are warming their fingers and locking in their rhythm — and the counter counts all of it.

Spam APM vs effective APM

That warm-up clicking created one of esports' favorite arguments: raw APM versus effective APM. Raw APM counts everything. Effective APM — eAPM — filters out repeated and redundant commands, like re-selecting the same control group three times in one second.

The gap is bigger than you would think. A player showing 250 raw APM might have an eAPM closer to 150. StarCraft II tracks both precisely because the community demanded an honest number, and it also ignores commands that cannot execute — spamming a rally point adds nothing. So when someone brags about their APM, the first question should always be: raw or effective?

What is a good APM? It depends on the genre

There is no single good APM, because genres demand wildly different input rates. Here is a realistic breakdown:

Notice the FPS row. A Counter-Strike pro's APM looks low next to a StarCraft pro, but nobody calls them slow — their skill lives in mouse placement and reaction time, not input count. Judge APM only inside its own genre.

High APM does not mean smart play

APM measures throughput, not intelligence. A 400 APM player losing to a 180 APM player is completely normal when the slower player's actions are smarter. One well-timed flank beats twenty panicked re-selections.

Think of APM as vocabulary and decision-making as grammar. A huge vocabulary only helps if the sentences make sense. The players worth copying are the ones whose APM spikes at the right moments — during the fight, not during the calm.

There is also a hardware floor: your actions have to actually register. High keyboard latency or a laggy browser tab can swallow inputs, which is worth ruling out before you blame your hands.

How to raise useful APM without wrecking your hands

Raising APM is a fitness problem, not a talent problem. Train it like one:

Carpal tunnel syndrome is real in esports — several pros have retired or missed seasons over wrist injuries. Chasing numbers is fine. Chasing them through pain is how a hobby ends.

The bottom line

APM is the esports stat everyone quotes and almost nobody reads correctly. It measures how much you do, not how well you play — and the gap between raw and effective APM is where the truth lives.
