Weighted Wheels: Odds and Nested Choices
A custom wheel can choose a name, a drawing prompt or the next challenge for a group. The important decision comes before the spin: should every option have the same chance, or should some appear more often? This guide explains the difference with numbers you can check, then shows how to combine several wheels without accidentally changing the odds.
Start with a clear list
Write one distinct outcome per option. “Draw an animal” and “Draw a cat” overlap, so decide whether you want broad categories or individual prompts. Remove accidental duplicates: two identical entries can give that label more total chance. For a simple name picker, assign every person the same positive weight. Agree on whether a winner stays in the list before you begin; removing winners changes the next draw.
Weights are ratios, not percentages
For a weighted choice, divide an option’s weight by the sum of all active weights. With weights 1, 2 and 3, the total is 6. The chances are 1/6, 2/6 and 3/6. Doubling every weight to 2, 4 and 6 leaves those chances unchanged. A weight of 20 means 20% only when the total weight is 100. Use positive values and inspect the displayed probabilities after editing the list.

Nested wheels multiply the chances
A nested wheel first chooses a category and then an option inside that category. Suppose “Creatures” and “Places” each have a 50% chance. If Creatures has four equally weighted entries, each creature has a final chance of 50% × 25% = 12.5%. If Places has only two equal entries, each place has a final chance of 50% × 50% = 25%. Equal categories do not automatically produce equal final outcomes.
To make all six final outcomes equally likely in that example, give Creatures a weight of 4 and Places a weight of 2, keeping the entries within each category equal. Each leaf then has a chance of 1/6. Choose the structure to match your goal: equal time for each topic, or equal chance for each individual prompt.
A short streak is not a promise
If draws are independent and the list stays unchanged, previous results do not alter the next spin. An option with a 50% chance can appear several times in a row. Five spins cannot demonstrate that a wheel matches its intended distribution. Review the configured probabilities first, then use longer samples to explore variation. If you remove a selected option, calculate the new total before comparing later results.
Build a character prompt that makes sense
Start with separate lists for a character’s role, home and objective. Use a category wheel when later choices depend on earlier ones: a sea explorer can draw equipment from a sea-themed list, while a mountain guide uses another list. Keep rare prompts at smaller positive weights instead of filling the list with repeated common entries. Turn a spin into a size-comparison challenge
Use a wheel to choose a practice theme, then open Guess the Size and compare the objects shown there. Think in ratios: if one object is twice as tall, compare heights, not the area of the silhouette. An image enlarged to twice its width and height covers four times the area, which can make your first impression misleading. Read whether a measurement describes height, length or diameter before making a comparison.
For a group session, agree on the theme and number of rounds, let everyone estimate before revealing the answer, and discuss which reference helped. Keep the random selection separate from the estimation skill: a lucky topic choice does not explain why a size estimate was accurate.
